Then again, the fact that the Don Hartman North East Sportsplex sits amidst one of Calgary’s densest concentrations of new and first generation Asian Canadians must have been part of the consideration as well. That, communication strategists likely concluded, would make a fine backdrop for Ms. Smith to reaffirm her commitment to protecting the enforcement of Alberta’s Human Rights Act—including its provisions on so-called hate speech—albeit with some new ideas about how to go about doing that.
Her insistence that the Wildrose party would “ban speech that advocates acts of violence or promotes hatred of any individual or group” represented a significant break with a resolution voted on by her party just last year. An overwhelming majority of members at Wildrose’s annual meeting vowed to “amend the Alberta Human Rights Act to unequivocally protect freedom of speech and freedom of the press” after witnessing too many cases of politically incorrect journalists and preachers getting snagged in the act’s broad net, and legally steamrolled by an unchecked Human Rights Commission (HRC) determined to snuff out the phenomenon of hurt feelings. But Ms. Smith is just the latest in a pageant of politicians that have pushed back against their parties in getting tough on HRCs. When even the most avowed conservative party leader looks at the prospect of stripping down human rights rules to categorically protect all kinds of speech, even the unpleasant sort, they all, it seems, ultimately get an irresistible chill in their feet.
Sigh...

I've heard some contradictory stuff out of this quarter. Even their watered down crap would be a large improvement. Still, the donations should be cut off to get them back in line.

Yes.
Ah, the seduction of 'almost there'.
So, seeing the gold ring (which is really brass) makes principles malleable and vote getting paramount.
Yup, just reinforces that all those in pursuit of power have infinitely diverse values all dependent on the situation.
Well now, ain't that a surprise. :))
I've said it before. It's not just the left that thinks this shit is okay. Conservatives are just as complicit in upholding these laws as Liberals and Socialists are.

Who could have seen that coming, huh?

Damn straight.
The first question Danielle needs to answer is: What is the proper role of a provincial government ?
Then, she needs to articulate an overall governing philosophy for her provincial conservative party--a set of conservative principles that will guide her (and inform voters beforehand) on what she will do when in power.
In this case, she can easily argue that a Provincial government shouldn't even BE in the business of running HRC's. We already have a court system in place to handle disputes between parties.
I'm not willing to give up on Danielle, because she is still miles ahead of the next best option--the Gary Mar led PCs. She is working hard, and so deserves some support from a guy like me--so I'll still donate to Wildrose, it's just a question of how much.
@CJ: there are no such things as 'conservative principles'. That is why conservative governments never implement appropriate policy. The only ones that really have principles on the right are libertarians. You should probably vote for her, but giving WRA is saying 'It's okay to be conservative instead of principled. Continue backsliding".
Last week, Ezra Levant had some guy from the Wildrose Alliance on his show and ripped him a new one over the Section 3 thing... The interview degenerated into a shouting match - I have never seen Ezra like that.

I imagine he probably takes it pretty personally, considering his history with the Alberta HRC.

Exactly - well said.

Fair 'nuff.
I've tried to find that interview on SunTV's website...no luck...how odd.
That is odd. I've noticed that they shift some of their videos around sometimes - as in, URLs will change and the like. Maybe the video got lost in the shuffle somewhere.
